Many students think of the scientific method as a step-by-step process that all scientists follow in order. But real research is rarely so neat and tidy…it is really more of a research cycle or spiral because things you learn in one step can change your ideas about what you’ve already done or about next steps.

Explore | We have come up with three ideas for our project. Our main question idea that we would like to investigate is... Research Question | Do different kinds of liquids effect the percentage of seeds that actually germinate? |
Predictions | We all think that the plant with the water will make the most percentage of alfalfa seeds grow. |
Experimental Design | *Plant pots *Alfalfa seeds *Potting soil *Salt *The acid we are using is sulphur dioxide acid. *Tap Water *mL Measuring Tool *mg Measuring tool We will put 500 mg of soil in each pot. We will also put 10 seeds in each pot. For the pots with salt we will mix 50 mg of salt with 1,000 mL of water. For the pots with acid we will also mix 1,000 mL of water with 4 mL of acid. For the pots with tap water we will use a container that contained 1,000 mL of water. After about two weeks we will see which liquid made the highest percentage of plants grow. When we say best we mean which plant had the better outcome. We watered each pot 75 mL of each liquid every day, other than on the weekends. We did not water the plant on the 17th of March. |
Conclusion | From our investigation we found out that the plants we gave the acid to had the most plants germinate. The water plants germinated the second best. Our salt-water plants had no plants germinate. 9 out of 40 plants germinated for the acid. The acid plants were the highest germinating plants. No plants germinated for the salt-water. 5 out of 40 plants germinated from the water pots. We think that the acid plants had more germinate is because the soil we used may have been lacking sulfur. Sulfur is essential for seeds to germinate well. We may have not used enough acid in the acid-water, which made that outcome. Our mentor explained to us that sulfur is produced by tropical volcanoes which is helpful to the plants growth. |
