By using PS as a learning platform my students experience authentic research. The students develop questions , design, run an experiment and interpret its data and develop various conclusions --all under the guidance of a botanist. The interactions with the scientist encourages deeper thinking within the experiment, creates a sense of what a scientist is like and allows the students to develop professional communication skills. This is a stretching experience--where the students are not given the answers to memorize , but have to problem solve and reinvent. I've been involved with PS for multiple years and every year the students learn and grow immensely with this long term design. (This year my kids have based our class t-shirt on the organism they researched (Arabidopsis)-- very cute)
