Research Information

Research Question
If we put a seed at the top of the pot, the middle, and the bottom of the pot, which seed will grow the longest?

Research Predictions
If we plant seeds at different levels in the soil, then we beleive the seed in the middle will be the longest because the top will be to dry, and the bottom will drown.

Experimental Design
1. Get materials.( Mung bean seeds, clear cups, dirt, fresh water, ruler, and 20 ML cup.)
2. Fill the clear cups with dirt.
3. Put seeds in high which will be right under the surface, medium will be as dead center as we can make it, and low which will be at the direct bottom and put the seeds at side of cup so you can see it.
4. Water it with twenty ML every other day.
5. Watch every day and post about it.
We are using buckwheat seeds and putting three seeds in each cup. We each have four cups, the fourth cup is for just in case we mess up. We will put twenty ML of water in each cup if needed.every-other day we will chek the seeds to see how they are doing. We are using buckwheat seeds and putting one seed in each cup. We each have three cups and are gonna have a extra cup just in case. We will each have nine seeds.

Research Conclusions
Our conclusion, based on the average, is that if you plant a seed at a high level, the plant from root to the tip of the stem will be longer than those of the control group, medium group, and the low group. Only one of the low cups even sprouted, let alone grew. If any farmers wanted to know, planting a seed at a higher level will make it grow the longest. We found out that lower seeds most likley won't even get close to the surface. The control plant, (planted between the top and the medium,) was only 1.3333333333 cm shorter than the high.

another thing about the seeds i noticed was that all the germinated seeds grew downward in direction.ithought that was an important obsevation.

our seeds grew more jarrod is sending a pic there is now only 1 cup that hasent germenated yet it is a high.we waterd the plants again today we had 2 add more dirt to 1 cup 'cuse there was way 2 much water & not a lot of dirt these seeds -as said on google- r suposed to germanati within 42 hours, we think the water is smushing the dirt together when we pore it in ( shae thinks that so do i) i think the plasnts r doing well & our exsperament will work.

Your Questions,( Vinod)
Wont the leaves be yellow? Because if you put, i dont know, tin over grass for a few months, the grass turns yellow.

And Hello Dr Kumar!
I don't want to take up too much personal space for the website, but I just wanted to say hello. I looked at your information here, on PlantingScience.org--quite impressive with the rice allele mining for abiotic stress resistance! I'm sure you know alot about soil conditions, water stress, and important aspects of seed germination.

HEY TEAM! Can anyone tell me what abiotic stress factors are? I realize these are used in scientific articles, and may not be in your textbooks, but...your project deals with them.

Bonne journee! (Have a good day, in French)
Janna
March 20, 2012 | 12:58 AM | Dr. Janna Rose  (Scientist/Mentor)

Hi Team!
You've already got photos up and everything! This is great, and it helps us see what you're doing. So, from the photos, I think you're looking at differences in the moisture of the soil, according to shallow, mid-, and taller amounts of soil in the cup? Does 20ml of water soak the bottom soil in the cup? Or, from what I read in your experimental design, do you have the soil levels the same in all cups, with the seeds planted at different levels? I'm not sure, so could you clarify your methods/experimental design a bit? Just write exactly what you did, so that somebody could repeat the steps and do it exactly the same as you.

Also--are you controlling for light by keeping the seeds by the side of the cup, so that they all have light? I think that's what you're doing, but could you write it down or write why you put the seeds by the side of the cup?

This reminds me--which data are you going to collect? Days until germination? Growth of stems (cotyledons), roots, first leaves, etc...? Make sure to write that in your design, too.

You are doing a great job! I'm looking forward to seeing your data, your results, tables, more photos, etc...

Keep up the good work!
--Janna (Dr Rose)

Hi team...
Thanks for putting up some picts of your investigation and thanks for clarifying a few of my questions.

Mr. Kumar has a really important question for your team to consider.... how are you measuring plant growth/germination? In your investigation question you said that you wanted to know which will germinate fastest. How will you measure that?

Can you add a brief explanation to your Experimental Design section? Maybe if you post your data table we could get an idea of the data you will be collecting and how you will organize it? This is pretty important to consider! You don't want to collect data that won't help you answer the question you set out to answer. :)

Hi
I think your plan of work is good but I've some questions related with experiment:
1. U've mentioned two quantities of water (12ml & 20 ml).....Say final volume by just check through pre experiment analysis.
2. Its not the way to check the seed growth by exposing them on cup-wall side. I think you can check the growth after finishing the experiment. Please u guys clear this question before starting the experiment.
Best of luck

seeds
we r puting 3 seeds in each cup. we will put the seeds on thed edj of each see through cup so we can see.
March 14, 2012 | 8:06 PM | Mr. Jason Keeler  (Teacher)

I think we discussed this in class but.... how will you see the seeds to know when they sprouted if they are buried in the dirt?

The only other comment/suggestion I have at this point is that you have a good amount of detail above BUT a lot of it is in your question and hypothesis. All you really need in the question and prediction is your quesion and prediction. All the details about the type and # of seeds would be better placed in your research design section! If you have time to edit this it might may things a little more clear for your readers!

I am curious to see what you find out! Hope you brought your materials so you can get started. Maybe you could even post a few pictures of what your are doing?
March 14, 2012 | 8:48 AM | Mr. Jason Keeler  (Teacher)

Ok guys and gals! Good start! Couple questions about your design...
How many seeds will you be using and what type of seeds are they?

You should describe the different levels you are placing your seeds so we know a little more about how deep your middle and bottom seeds are.

How will you be measuring the growth/germination of the plant? The ones that are buried will be hard to see when they germinate unless you use some creativity to be able to see them!

Be careful with your watering... will you water every day if the soil is already wet?????

Consider these things and 'tweak' your description above as necessary!

Hello Dr. Rose
Where the Team Dream Big Basketball has gone, I've not seen any post from last two days......This session, i think will be more interesting....one teacher and two mentors.....So the young researchers come n share your final idea....and thanks for late but welcome note of Dr. Catrina Adams
March 12, 2012 | 12:56 PM | Dr. Catrina Adams

A (slightly delayed) Welcome!
I am happy to welcome you to this community of plant researchers. Your team has the opportunity to be mentored by a scientist to help you develop and perform your own research project. The mentor's role is to encourage and guide you through the scientific process of discovery. The more you share your ideas and research information online, the more your mentor can help.

Your scientist mentor for this project will be Dr. Vinod Kumar from National Research Center on Plant Biotechnology. Sorry for the slightly delayed welcome. Many of you have already introduced yourselves and are already posting some possible research topic ideas to get a conversation rolling.

These resources are available to help you get started:

Getting started...
Hi Team Dream Big Basketball!
I'm another scientist and a mentor for your school. I study plant chemicals that can be used as medicines, but I also like to study how the plants use those same chemicals for their own defense against bacteria, fungi, and herbivores.

I think Vinod Kumar (Hello!) and Mr. Keeler (Hi!) have given you some great tips on filling out your experimental design. You can have some different settings (like top of pot, middle of pot, bottom of pot) and put multiple seeds in each setting. You can measure the distance to the top of the pot, all the other variables like water, light, temp, and there are many different ways to measure plant "growth". You can all decide on one (or more) ways to do all that.

So you're going to do the distance-to-top experiment and not the direction-of-seed-growth experiment? I was a little confused by the previous comments posted, but either one is a good idea.

Keep us posted on your experiment! Can you take some photos of your project, when it gets underway?
--Janna (Dr. Rose)
March 10, 2012 | 6:55 AM | Vinod Kumar  (Scientist/Mentor)

Hi
Dont start your experiment with just one seed in each direction. I've suggested some points in my earlier mail and I think it will help u a lot.......just give complete picture of your experiment before starting it...............Good Luck
March 10, 2012 | 6:32 AM | Vinod Kumar  (Scientist/Mentor)

Hi Shae
I m from India and working in Indian Agricultural Research institute, New Delhi (India). our group is working on "Bioprospecting of genes and allele mining for Abiotic stress resistance in rice".
Your investigation question is good but seeding should be same considering all remaining abiotic conditions same. Your teacher (Mr. keeler)'s question regarding the measurement of what seed sprouting or growth is also important. I think u sud measure seed growth and keep minimum 30 seeds in each direction. I think u all other getting from Mr. Keeler.

Thanks and cheers

Appropriate comments in this conversation space...
Hi team!
One reminder for today and in the future that we haven’t really talk about yet but should have….

Please do not use this site for ‘everyday’ conversations!  Everything you type is viewed by everyone and we all become a part of your conversation even if we don’t want to be! It’s kind of like having a REALLY loud conversation in a classroom. It can be a disruption for the rest of the students who are working. Thanks for keeping this in mind as you work on your investigations!
March 9, 2012 | 6:55 AM | Mr. Jason Keeler  (Teacher)

Investigation Question
Hi guys. I like how your investigation question considers the fact that seeds fall to the ground in all different ways... sometimes up, sometimes down, sometimes in pieces. I would like to encourage you to consider a few more 'orientations' other than just sideways and right side up. Think about all the different directions that a seed may fall.

I'm also curious about how you will measure 'growing ability'? Do you mean the ability to germinate (sprout) or the actual growth of the sprout after it germinates?

Your off to a great start! Try to combine the other two members into your discussions today as you design how you will investigate your question! :)
