Research Information

Research Question
Which will germinate faster in a slightly salty environment, Corn or peas?

Research Predictions
If you were to plant corn/peas in soil with higher salinity levels, then corn will germinate faster than peas because it has a higher level of salinity.

Experimental Design
16 cups all together:
4 cups for corn-saltwater
4 cups for corn- fresh water

4 cups for peas- saltwater
4 cups for peas-fresh water

Research Conclusions
Our conclusion is that peas grew faster in a higher salinity levels than peas. Our hypothesis stated the other way around; that corn would grow faster. Our hypothesis was proven to be incorrect!

Farewell and Best Wishes
As this research project is now in the final stages of wrapping-up, we wish to thank everyone who participated in this inquiry; the students, mentors, teachers and others behind the scenes. We appreciate all of your efforts and contributions to this online learning community.

Scientific exploration is a process of discovery that can be fun! There are many unanswered questions about plants just waiting for new scientists to consider, investigate, and share.

Please come back and visit the PlantingScience Research Gallery Archive anytime to view this project in the future. You can search the Archive by key word, team name, topic, or school name.

Good bye for now.
Warm regards,
The PlantingScience team

You're welcome!
I'm so glad your plants did well! I looked at your slide presentation and it looks very professional. Are you sure you guys are in 6th grade? You did a better job than some of my college students! :)

I would love to keep talking to you - keep me posted on how things are going. Have great Thanksgivings, and hopefully you won't have more bad weather for awhile!

Chris

We will keep on talking until we are officially done!

Thanks so much, YOU RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
talk to you soon okay@!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SNOW!!!
I'm glad that your seeds have started to sprout - start thinking of possible reasons for the salty seeds to be growing better than the ones getting plain water, and also for the peas to be doing better than the corn. Corn plants are taller than pea plants when they're mature, just so you know.

It's so amazing about the snow this year! It's actually much warmer here than it usually is - yesterday was in the 60's! Today, though, is colder and very windy - my office is on the top floor and the wind is howling through my AC unit (it sounds very spooky). I'm sorry your power is out - stay huddled together with blankets with your family, and hopefully it will come on again soon. Our furnace broke last winter but thankfully it was during a warm spell so nothing was harmed - Wisconsin (where I live) gets REALLY cold!!

NEWS!!!!!
The peas are doing great there is one that is 7 inches tall!!!!!! The corn one of the corn seeds in saltwater has grown the tallest but they are not growing as fast as the peas.Guess what we got like 4 or 5 inches of snow and I lost power so now our house is freezing!!!!

Happy Halloween!!
It IS totally ironic that we had/have the same dog. They're not terribly common here, especially the black and tan. We searched for 3 years to find a good breeder that bred that color and would have puppies available in spring so he could grow up a little over the summer before coming to work with us. He was born on Valentine's Day! (If I get a second Cavalier I want a tri-color)

Any more news about your seedlings? Anything happening in the corn cups?

Chris

Dogs
Hi again!
This is Sammy speaking! I wanted to let you know that i had a cavilear king charles spaniel! He is tri - color though..... He was put to sleep and I am very sad.
How ironic that you have one too!

Puppies and peas
Your costumes sound great - I'm really jealous that I don't get to dress up! My puppy isn't dressing up either although he has some cream colored fur under his chin that looks like a beard so we're going to dress him as Santa for Christmas. He's adorable - Google black and tan Cavalier King Charles spaniel to see what he looks like. His hair isn't as long as it will be when he grows up, but he looks more like an adult every day. His fur is incredibly soft and he loves to be petted and adored. He comes to work with me every day and my students love him!

Keep me posted on how your seeds are doing, and start thinking about possible reasons to explain your findings, especially since they're different from your prediction. Is there anything else about the cups that would explain it - some are getting more light, they're closer to a heater, etc.?

Chris

PS You guys are really nice, too - I've been mentoring with Planting Science for 3 years and you're my best group yet - by far! :)

Dear Chris,
Yeah the peas are the cutest things in the world, is your puppy rally cute???
Good i am glad that the fuzistuff on the corn was only mold and it wont affect the plants germination. This is a big suprise but it seems the plants that are in the saltwater are growing a bit faster. That stinks that you have to work on Halloween but here is what we are being
Cagney(me)- Crayon (blue)
Sammy- Hamburger ( she loves hambergers and she wants me to tell you that she is a girl:)
Claire- Football fan ( Giants)
Ryan- doesn't know(he is a boy)
Is your dog being anything??????
Thats great you know our names and you know we live in N.J. and you know we are in 6th grade
tomorrow for us is supposed to be raining!!!:(
Sincerely,
the 4 of us
P.S. your really really nice

Great news!!!
This is wonderful news! Don't the peas just look so cute when they start to grow? The fuzziness on the corn is probably a little bit of mold, but the plant should be just fine. I'm so glad that your seeds are starting to germinate - did you see any differences between the salt water and regular water treatments so far?

I'm not being anything for Halloween, since I have to work that day. What are you guys going as?

You are Cagney, Claire, Ryan, and Sammy, and you are in 6th grade in New Jersey. I am Chris at a university in Illinois, and it was a beautiful day here. We are right on the shore of Lake Michigan and when I walked my puppy today (I bring him to work) we went to the lakeshore and climbed on the rocks that keep the shoreline from eroding. It was sunny and warm, but the leaves are changing color so it seems like fall. Tomorrow will be colder - winter is coming!

sincerely,
the 4 of us
P.S. do you know our names????????????????

Dear Chris,
We have planted our plants there are two peas that are in SALTWATER that have started to sprout one of the corn seeds have started to sprout we are very suprised that the saltwater ones have started to grow. We put three seeds in each cup. We did 4 cups of peas in saltwater, then 4 cups of peas in fresh water, then for corn 4 cups of corn in saltwater, and finally 4 cups of corn in freshwater. And I am really sorry that we haven't got back to you in a while. HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!What are you being this year??????
Sincerely,
Cagney, Sammy, Claire, and Ryan

Hooray for peas
Peas sound great - I tried growing edamame in my garden last year and something dug up and ate every single seed! Hopefully you'll have better luck with the peas. By normal conditions I meant without extra salt, not outdoors. It's too cold to grow plants outside now - they'll freeze before they get big enough for your experiments. My advice would be to grow 2 sets of each type of plant, one set in regular soil, watered with water, etc., and the other set in the slightly salty conditions, however you're going to create that. Try to only vary one thing so that if you see a difference you know that it's because of the thing you varied.

Peas
Instead of Edamame, we are using peas

Thanks!
dear Chris,
Thank you for the suggestions, we are going to duplicate our experiment and have one group outside, Thank you so much!

Project ideas
Hi Bubble Blossoms,

This sounds like a good start. If I were you, I would also germinate pots of both in normal conditions as controls. Otherwise you don't know if one plant would just naturally germinate faster than the other. Good luck!

Idea
Hi again!

The group has just discussed what we want to do for our experiment. WE were thinking of this problem statement: Which would germinate faster in a slightly salty environment, corn or Edamame?

Thank you so much! We will absolutely take your advice!
