Research Information

Research Question
Is the life cycle of the spore plants the same as the life cycle of seed plants?

Research Predictions
The life cycle of the spore plants is not the same as the life cycle of seed plants.

Experimental Design
The teacher made sterile petridishes with spores and gave us seeds of a seed plant (pea). We investigate growth of c-fern and seed plant with the miroscope and with our own eyes.

Research Conclusions
We conclude that ferns are different compared to seed plants. Ferns start as spores that grow into a male and female. After fertilization a fern is born. Our seed plants start as seeds that grow fast into a plant.

Farewell and Best Wishes
As this research project is now in the final stages of wrapping-up, we wish to thank everyone who participated in this inquiry; the students, mentors, teachers and others behind the scenes. We appreciate all of your efforts and contributions to this online learning community.

Scientific exploration is a process of discovery that can be fun! There are many unanswered questions about plants just waiting for new scientists to consider, investigate, and share.

Please come back and visit the PlantingScience Research Gallery Archive anytime to view this project in the future. You can search the Archive by key word, team name, topic, or school name.

Good bye for now.
Warm regards,
The PlantingScience team

Hi laura,

This is the last week to work on the plantingsience site. It was very nice to work with you! Thank you for all the weeks that you work with us. I hope you enjoyed!
Working on plantingscience with you was an amazing adventure!

And... see the video (there we are saying goodbye!)

bye bye,
Xena, Iris, Senné and Lente (Spring)

Hi Laura,

We were in the recent week not working on the site, because we had a test week.
The c-ferns are now growing (at the foto) and they are very little and the beans are quite big! And findly, our beans are now growing.

Bye bye,
Our team.

Hi all:

Did you do anything differently with your beans than everyone else ? Why do you think they have not sprouted yet?

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Laura

Hi
The c-ferns are very fast growing one.
The reproduction is finished!
How is it with you?

Bye bye,

Hi,

Yes, but not ours! The beans grow from everyone, but ours do not grow, it's very strange...

bye bye,
Senné

The Silx:

Thank you for the update!

Do you see your brown bean growing?

Laura

hi everyone!!
the spores are swimming because they propagate, but now they don't swimming.
Now we wait until they grow.

The Silx:

What wonderful pictures you have posted!

I like your observation about the swimming. Why do you think they swim?

Laura

Hi Laura,

The spores swim towards each other! It's funny to see!!
And our teacher says they are tired, they swim slower.

Senné

Hi Laura,

We have the research questions, a research prediction and a experimental design.

but I must go.

bye bye,
Lente, Xena, Iris and me Senné!

Hi everyone:

I have some questions for you to help you think about your research question and prediction:

What part of the life cycle do you think will differ?

Do you think spore and seed plants will have some similarities in their life cycles, or be completely different?

Cheers,
Laura

Hi everyone!

I am Iris and my hobbies are swimming and ice-skating.
What are your hobbies?

I'm very excited to be involved to c-fern!

Greetings from Holland Iris.

Hi Laura,

I also look forward to work with you!

Something about myself:
I like playing oboe, hockey, drawing. And I like pigs. I want a real pig, but the garden is too small so that's not possible.

bye bye,
Senné

Hi everyone:

Please post your research information when you have a chance, especially what are your research question and prediction(s)?

It is great to see that you have a team photo posted!

Hi everyone!

I look forward to working with everyone. Do you have any ideas about your research project yet? Please post them if you do!

A bit about myself:

My main hobbies are volunteering, soccer, reading, watching documentaries, playing guitar, drawing or painting, hiking, natural history outings, and writing poetry.

My current research uses computer modeling to understand the predictability of the abundance (how many individuals) and identities (particular species) of plants in the landscape, which is important for conservation and management.

I have been a PlantingScience mentor for several years now, and I enjoy mentoring students.

Cheers,
Laura Super

Welcome!
I am happy to welcome you to this community of plant researchers. Your team has the opportunity to be mentored by a scientist to help you develop and perform your own research project. The mentor's role is to encourage and guide you through the scientific process of discovery. The more you share your ideas and research information online, the more your mentor can help.

Your scientist mentor for this project will be Laura Super from University of British Columbia. Please introduce yourself and post some possible research topic ideas to get a conversation rolling.

These resources are available to help you get started:
Thinking Like a Scientist / Working Like a Scientist
Designing Experiments
Guide to Using A Spreadsheet

Best wishes as you start this scientific journey. We are all pleased to share this experience with you.
Have fun!

Sincerely,
The PlantingScience team
