Farewell and Best Wishes As this research project is now in the final stages of wrapping-up, we wish to thank everyone who participated in this inquiry; the students, mentors, teachers and others behind the scenes. We appreciate all of your efforts and contributions to this online learning community. Scientific exploration is a process of discovery that can be fun! There are many unanswered questions about plants just waiting for new scientists to consider, investigate, and share. Please come back and visit the PlantingScience Research Gallery Archive anytime to view this project in the future. You can search the Archive by key word, team name, topic, or school name. Enjoy the final phases of your project! Warm regards, The PlantingScience team |

Excellent results, ninjas. This is exactly what I would have expected you to see. The extra ingredients in the Dr. Pepper and Diet Coke can actually cause the plants to lose water! The plants that don't get as much water won't we able to grow as much. This happens because water moves into and out of plants because of a process called osmosis. Osmosis causes water to move to a place that has more solutes. You can think of a solute as the different ingredients in the sodas. Since there are a lot of solutes in the sodas, the liquid can move from the plant to the soil. When you use plain water, the water will move into the plant because the plant has more solutes than the water sitting in the soil. The whole process is a little more complicated than that, but I think it helps to explain the results that you found. Very neat! |

Good! As long as they still have some water, they'll probably start growing more any time now. |

Hi team, I'm glad to hear that you've gotten things started off. It may take a few days for the seeds to germinate. I'm not sure that your seeds will be able to germinate in the mulch. If they don't germinate in the mulch, wet two paper towels and stick the seeds in between them. Once the stem and roots start coming out of the seed, plant them back into the mulch. Good luck! |

project we have started on our project and so far nothiung has grown. we think that might be because we are growing our plants in mulch bercause our science teacher ran out of dirt and all we had left was mulch |

Neat idea super flying monkey ninjas! Which liquid do you think will work the best and why? Do have any ideas about how to measure plant growth? For example, you could use height, number of leaves, or something else that you could come up with. I'm excited to see what will happen with your plants! |

Hello Hi everyone! I'm looking forward to working with you on your project. Do you have any ideas yet? I don't remember a specific event that got me interested in science. I think I've always been interested in how things worked and studying science is the best way to discover those answers. Right now I'm studying fossil plants that grew millions of years ago in Antarctica. |

Dr. Claire Hemingway
Welcome! I am happy to welcome you to this community of plant researchers. Your team has the opportunity to be mentored by a scientist to help you develop and perform your own research project. The mentor's role is to encourage and guide you through the scientific process of discovery. The more you share your ideas and research information online, the more your mentor can help. Your scientist mentor for this project will be Mr. Andrew Schwendemann from University of Kansas. Please introduce yourself to get a conversation rolling. We're also eager to hear about your interests and any brainstorming ideas you might have about your germination experiments. These resources are available to help you get started: Thinking Like a Scientist / Working Like a Scientist Designing Experiments Guide to Using A Spreadsheet Best wishes as you start this scientific journey. We are all pleased to share this experience with you. Have fun! Sincerely, The PlantingScience team |
