Research Information

Research Question
How do roots grow when the direction of gravity changes?

Research Predictions
The plants will grow in the direction of gravity faster than being laid horizontally.

Experimental Design
Materials:
blotting paper
seeds (1 package)
CD 'jewel" cases (18)
permanent marker
modeling clay
shallow pie plates (6)
eyedropper filled with water
lab notebook
ruler and protractor
graph paper

Method:
1. Begin preparing "seed sandwich." Cut the blotting paper to fit into the CD cases
2. Place blotting paper in 6 Cd cases
3. Moisten paper
4. Place four seeds on moistened paper
5. Close CD cases
6. Label backs of all 6 seed sandwhiches 1-6 with marker. Mark the four edgeson front side up, down, left, and right
7. Using modeling clay hold two in place (#1 and #2) upright in their own shallow pie plate with up on top
8. Place #3 and #4 horizontally (flat) in two pie plates. Use modeling clays to lift them up off plate
9. #5 and #6 set vetically with up on top. Rotate sandwhiches 90 degrees every two days. Keep careful records
10. Moisten seeds daily if neccessary
11. Watch seeds and the roots growing
12. Observe how rootlets grow under differnet conditions
13. Record the length of root growth. Draw or take pictures.
14. Make a data table to show length of each roolets at different times. Graph this data. Did they grow faster in direction of gravily vs. growing horizontally?
15. Repeat entire experiment with fresh materials with 7-12 and 13-18. Space out the start of each trial by a few days.

Research Conclusions
In our project the bags (seed sandwhiches) laying horizontal did not grow as good as those that were hanging vertically. The bags that we turned grew just the same as those that were just hanging vertically. SO in conclusion gravity does not affect plant growth.

Good- bye
Thank you to everyone taking part in this inquiry. It was great fun to bring you, your teacher, and your scientist mentor together online. There are many unanswered questions about plants----just waiting for young investigators to explore. We hope you are going away with the confidence that you can take on new scientific challenges.

Best wishes for the remainder of your school year!
Sincerely,
The PlantingScience team

It is going very good. Our control is #1,2,7,8,13, and 14. We haven't started #'s 13-18. Seeds are growing in bags 1,2,3,5, and 6.

Hi again. Canada is pretty similar to the USA in terms of daily life. We get the same TV shows, we drive the same cars, etc... And the weather is similar to the northern states (where I live in Victoria, the weather is just like in Seattle). And yes I've been to the states a lot of times!

How is the project coming along? What are your controls?

jacie. I also have lots of animals (horses, cattle) etc. i live out in the country and most people refer to me as the hick or country redneck but i cant help it lol :)

Yes I think i'm going to a small college than wkorking my way up to a bigger college. I haven't really picked a major yet but i'm thinking on being a chef but not for sure.

Yes, I'm planning on going to Colorado State University to be a paleontologist. I love learning about Native American history and world history before 1870. I am trying to go to a summer program to help a paleontologist on a dig site or anything else they would want me to do.

college plans?
jacie.yes ma"am ,i plan on goin to redlands college at elreno and then go on to osu and graduatue with a vet degree and start my own vet pratice and hopefully get started off on the right track.

You wanted to know a bit about me? My hobbies are dancing, hiking and of course gardening (surprise, surprise). I live in Victoria, BC, way up in Canada. :) My pets include 2 house cats, a couple of fish tanks, and a whole lot of well fed squirrels, deer and birds in our yard. We'd have a much larger menagerie (including goats, chickens and a horse) if I had my way, but we don't have an acreage so our neighbours would hate us (and yes, that's how you spell "neighbor" in Canada).
Are you all planning on going to college/university once you finish high school?

We would love to know a little about you. Whats your hobbies? Where do you live? Do have any animals?

Thank you for your comments. We appreciate it. I wasn't finished with the methods yet.

Our rationale
To see if plants could grow in space depending on the gravity.
October 28, 2009 | 7:13 AM | Alina Fisher  (Scientist/Mentor)

So what is your rationale?
Hi All,
Interesting experiment. But out of curiosity, why are you interested in the rate of root growth depending on the change in gravity? Do you see some application of this? I'm just interested in finding out what prompted your idea. :)

As for your methods, I'm confused by points 7, 8 and 9. Are the seed sandwhiches in 7 and 8 both in horizontal dishes, only that one is propped up with modeling clay while the other is not? Can you add a diagram or photo just so it's clear?

For the sake of maintaining controls, you may want to ensure that all the seeds are getting the same amount of sun (same location from window/light source) and water (you may want to add a set amount of water to all containers at the same time).

Have a super day!

Thank You
Thanks for being our mentor. We have an idea about what experiment we want to do. It will be great if we do it right. Again thanks for being our mentor.

Sincerly,

About Me
Hello my name is Harley. I am from rural Oklahoma. I love most animals. I love learning about world history before 1870s. I am planning on going to Colorado State University to be a paleontologist. I am in various volenteer groups at my school including Blue Thumb and S.W.A.T.. I'm not fond of plants but I'm hoping that will change.
