Research Information

Research Question
How would a sunflower react differently in a dark room with one small light, than in actual sunlight?

Research Predictions
In the dark room, the sunflower will grow just as good as long as there's even a little bit of light

Experimental Design
We're going to put the sunflower in a well lit room, and the other sunflower in the lab with the lights off except on small one.

Research Conclusions
The sunflower kept with only one light on didn't grow nearly as well as the one with full on sunlight. Our hypothesis was correct.

Good bye
Thank you to everyone who participated in this inquiry.

We hope you are going away with some new insights about how science works, and confidence that you can take on new scientific challenges. There are a lot of fascinating research questions---just waiting for young investigators to join in the fun.

Best wishes for the remainder of your school year!
Jennifer

reply to RAVEN!!
hey RAVEN! this is Jason from dandyLIONZ. I was the one that actually came up with the idea. We actually came up with a list of possible research questions we could do, and in the end my question got chosen. Also, we chose it because we thought it would probably less cheapest :] TEEHEE!

dandyLIONZ reply
hi...elisha. this is jason from dandyLIONZ a.k.a. the team that is doing the chocolate question thingy :] ummm..yes we did put water into the plant with the chocolate. We are actually done with the project, and the plant in the chocolate didn't grow at all, not even like a little sprout o_0

info..
You know, if you put a stick or pole of sum sort into the plant that you have the picture, it would wrap around it.

Your plants are growing really good!

why do you think the seeds automatically go towards the light?

help
we are having a little trouble with our project. one of the plants did not germinate. We have deciede that the one that did is going to be used as our light plant. do you have have any suggestions to what we can do to make our project more successful?

i saw your picture of it growing upside down, it looks great! but is that also part of your experiment?

we are using sunflower seeds for our expirement.

what type of plantss are you using

Thanks. Your ideas helped us a lot and we definitely took most of them into consideration.

It's good to hear from you!
Here are some suggestions for information to record about your experiment.
1. What kinds of light bulbs are you using in the two rooms?
2. How far away is the plant in the lab from the light source?
3. How far away is the plant in the well lit room from the light source?
4. How are you making sure that the lights stay on (and off) as you have set them up to be?
5. Are you keeping your plants in continual light or are you doing a day/night routine? If so, how many hours of light and how many hours of dark are you using?
Let me know if there other questions or ideas you'd like me to answer.

our experiment
We are going to see how plants react differently to light. One plant will be in sunlight and one plant will be in a dark room with a single lamp light.

idea for you
How do tropisms, that is plant growth movements, work?

Plants actually move, chemicals, light, gravity & wind can cause plants to grow a certain way---THINK & research--w will be in the computer lab on Thursday.

Good Luck!

Luv, Ms. L

Experiment
we need help on what our project will be on. what do you specialize in, and will you give us some ideas?

Welcome!
I am happy to welcome you to this community of plant researchers.

Your scientist mentor, Melanie Bayles from Oklahoma State University, will help you focus your ideas as you develop and refine your research question and experimental design. Best wishes as you embark on this scientific journey. We are all pleased to share this experience with you.

Have fun!
