Research Information

Research Question
What type of liquid grows a sunflower the highest? (Water, Apple Juice, Diet Pepsi, and Coffee)

Research Predictions
We predict that coffee will grow a sunflower the best .

Experimental Design
1. Gather materials.
2. Put plants in soil.
3. Water with liquids.
4. Put in grow lab.
5. Measure when it sprouts.
6. Repeat daily.

Research Conclusions
We measured the total height of the sunflower seed using different liquids. We used twenty milliliters of each liquid to water the plant, and we stayed consistant every day making sure we used twenty milliliters of each liquid. We also kept them in a grow lad which gives them the light and temperature that they need to grow.

We found out that water grows a sunflower the highest. Then diet pepsi grows it the second highest, and coffee grows it the thrid highest. Then apple juice didn't grow a sunflower seed at all, it completely killed the plant. So we would suggest that you water any plant with water espically a sunflower plant.

March 20, 2009 | 10:36 PM | Cody  (Team Member)

Yes
They are all added together and they are in cm also I think water because normally it grows plants the best
March 20, 2009 | 6:30 AM | Dr. Shannon Datwyler  (Scientist/Mentor)

Nice graph!
Cody-good job on the graph! Do the heights represent the heights of all seedlings added together? Are they in centimeters? Why do you think that the plants grown with just water are tallest? It's very interesting that the apple juice plants haven't grown at all. I can't wait to see what happens.

observations
our plants are really growing good they look really good atleast 3 cm and up
March 17, 2009 | 5:38 AM | Dr. Shannon Datwyler  (Scientist/Mentor)

Excellent!
Cody and Kyle-

That's great--it sounds like most of the seeds are sprouting. Are you recording the number of seeds that have sprouted in each cup? The only reason that I ask is that it's not listed in your observations. You may find that knowing the day that each seed sprouted will be useful. Keep up the good work!

Similar Project
Hey you guys. My group is doing a very similar topic to yours. We are researching what types of water help sunflower seeds grow. Why do you think coffee would grow the best? Also, what kind of water are you using? Tap, Spring, Purified?

we had a seed starting 2 sprout!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
March 11, 2009 | 1:37 AM | kyle  (Team Member)

ok
ok that would be good cause they did seem dry today
March 10, 2009 | 10:17 PM | Cody  (Team Member)

ok
thats good kyle and we are going to change to 20ml because our plants are very dry
March 10, 2009 | 9:53 AM | kyle  (Team Member)

hey
i just added the height for a variable
March 10, 2009 | 9:50 AM | kyle  (Team Member)

good call
hey i never thought of the height of the plant as a variable i thin that i will add the Good call .
March 10, 2009 | 4:57 AM | Cody  (Team Member)

ok
I will consider that and we have just planted we r going to use 10 mL of liquid

journals
Kyle and Cody-

Nice job on the controls and variables. One thing that you might consider as a variable, though, is the height of the plants, especially if you're going to measure them every day.

Nice start on observations!
Kyle and Cody-

It looks like you're off to a great start. Measuring in centimeters is a great way to go. Have you planted all of your seeds now? I'm anxious to see what happens.

observations
our seed was .1 grams and 1 cm and it was soft
March 8, 2009 | 5:14 AM | kyle  (Team Member)

observations
i know that but in mm cm or inches which one
March 8, 2009 | 1:13 AM | Cody  (Team Member)

observations
When we looked at our seeds we thought that the sunflower was shaped like a rounded triangle and it was smooth. Kyle I think we should measure it with a ruler
March 6, 2009 | 9:35 PM | kyle  (Team Member)

no
we havent decided yet but cody what do you think how should we measure it ?
March 6, 2009 | 10:15 AM | Stacy Boyle  (Teacher)

A question about your question
Which will grow the highest-

Have you determined how you will measure your plant growth?
March 6, 2009 | 9:10 AM | kyle  (Team Member)

yeah
i agree that is what we should do it is true we would probably have a bad seed so thanks for that help : )
March 6, 2009 | 5:04 AM | Dr. Shannon Datwyler  (Scientist/Mentor)

Oh, I misunderstood...
I see. You're thinking two pots per liquid with one seed per pot? How about if you put 3 or 4 seeds in each pot? Sometimes you just get bad seeds, so if you're seeds don't germinate, it might be hard to tell if this is because your seeds are bad or because the liquids that you use are harming the seeds. You don't want to have too many pots, for sure, but there should be plenty of space for 3 seeds in each one. Does that sound like it will work?

Shannon
March 6, 2009 | 1:48 AM | kyle  (Team Member)

project
we were giong to use two seeds per liquid not 8 but what would you rather suggest ?
March 6, 2009 | 12:30 AM | Dr. Shannon Datwyler  (Scientist/Mentor)

Sounds good!
Hey guys, I think eight seeds per liquid is a good number. As for how much liquid, I think you'll have to play that by ear. You might try to experiment with some dry soil to figure out how much liquid you would need to add to make the soil moist, but not soaked. Part of this depends on the size of your pots. Are you going to use small cups or will your pots be larger than that? I would recommend starting with about 10-20 ml of liquid (1-2 ounces) and see how that works. If it's enough, great. If not, add about 10 ml (1 ounce) at a time until the soil is moist. Then, use as much as you added to make the soil moist each time you water. Let me know what you find about how much liquid you need. Good luck! Shannon

Experiment
I also agree that coffee will do the best because of the caffeine. We still are not sure on the amount of liquid what do you suggest?
March 5, 2009 | 5:16 AM | kyle  (Team Member)

hey
we were going to do just two test so we were going to use eight seeds thats it because we have two test and four liquids so that is what we were planning do you think that we should change to more seeds or not ? well either way we will have done a great job and i am glad that you were our scientist it is working great !!!
March 5, 2009 | 5:14 AM | kyle  (Team Member)

yeah
yeah i think the caffeine will grow it better and diet pepsi will do ok but it is diet so it probably doesn't have as much caffeine in it and the soil should be moist before we plant that is a good idea
March 5, 2009 | 4:58 AM | Dr. Shannon Datwyler  (Scientist/Mentor)

Good start!
Hi guys-it looks like you have a good start to your experiment. Why do you think that you'll have more growth with coffee? Is there something in the coffee that you think will increase growth (are you thinking caffeine)? If so, do you expect to see more growth with diet pepsi also?

Something else to consider is how much of each liquid you'll add to the seeds. You may have to experiment a bit to determine this. I would suggest making sure that you start with moist soil before you plant the seeds, and then water with the same volume of liquid every 2-3 days when the soil seems to be dry. You'll want to add enough liquid to make the soil moist, but not so much that you have extra liquid. Also, how many seeds will you have for each liquid? I would suggest at least 7-10 per liquid (why do you think I suggest so many?) Are you going to have just one pot or cup for each liquid, or do you want to split the seeds into two cups? Are you going to measure only when the seeds germinate or are you also going to measure the height of the seedlings? Both are valid and they might give you different information.

I know it seems like a lot of questions, but I think you're off to a great start. These are just things to think about before you set up the experiment.

hey
hey , i think that we should test atleast 3 of each seed so we can compare our results so we don't have to rely on just one test .

Ideas
Hi Cody, hi Kyle! Sounds like you both have some ideas to start with. They both sound interesting. Here are a couple of things to think about. Cody, you suggested trying to grow sunflowers in different liquids. What kinds of liquids would you like to use? How many different liquids would you want to try (you definitely want to include water...)? Kyle, you are thinking about trying a bunch of different seeds and comparing them to one another. How many would you need to use for each type of seed to see a difference? Two, five, ten, or more? Think about it a bit and talk to each other. Let's keep talking about ideas as they come up.
