our project is now over but we are keeping four plants to water to see how long they live. Ocean water didn't even grow and purified water grew then died. We are keeping tap and well water. |

Very good. Have you started to think about why these seeds are germinating first? Have a good weekend. Phil |

three is a charm We now have three germinating seedlings. Two in well water in and one in tap water. The next type of water that might germinate be is probably going to be the purified water. |

germination Is the soil slightly moist or wet? If it just a little damp from misting then the seeds won't germinate. |

doing fine our project we are working on is doing just fine. We are predicting that the well water will work the best growing the seeds but we are still working and there is still no sign of germination yet. |

this is our procsure plan 1. Fill the pot up to about the brim of the small pot! 2. Put the lima bean seed one inch in to the dirt. 3. Cover the seed and then put the pot in the sun. 4. Put one spoon of water on the soil, once or twice a day. You will do this with each type of water in this experiment. 5. Record the results every two days, measure the growth of the plant. |

Just Fine We are about to start our project in the next few days. We have turned in our procedure list and our materials list. The seeds are lima beans and will have two seeds for each type of water. |

beans Beans sound like a good choice. What is your experimental set-up? Are you growing these in soil? This is an important consideration. |

seed choice If you are growing them in soil I would suggest, corn, beans, peas, or sunflower. Beans and corn would probably grow the fastest and best choice. IF you are growing these in petri dishes, I would suggest grass seeds of some sort. |

salinity I found a reference that said 0.3g/l would be tolerable to most plants. You could go up from there. Realize that this is dealing with irrigation and not standing water. On that line, what is your experimental set-up? How are you going to do this (pots with seeds and soil, Petri dishes?). Also will you have replicates or just one set-up per water treatment? Replicates are an important part of any experiment. i look forward to hearing back from you about this. |

salt water How about we address a real problem, that of agriculture near oceans. You could try to find out the salinity of ocean water and go with that. ANother option applies to irrigated lands. In agricultural areas where fresh water is transported in canals, evaporation of the water slowly increases the salt concentration (Are you following me?). So you could do some quick research and find out what an average salinity of irrigation water might be. I'll do a quick search and see what I can find. Phil |

Greetings Smarty Pants Hello everyone. I want to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Phil Gibson and I am in the Department of Botany/Microbiology and the Department of Zoology at the University of Oklahoma. I study a variety of things but do a lot of work in seed germination. I am looking forward to assisting with you project. Let me know what I can do to help. Best, Phil |

Dr. Claire Hemingway
Hello and Welcome! Hello David Hinson Middle School Team 4, I am delighted to welcome you as a new member of the community of science researchers. We are so glad your team is joining in the fun plant investigations. We enjoyed working with David Hinson teams last fall. So, it is great to have a chance to talk with your team this spring. I would like to introduce you to your scientist mentor for the project, Dr. Phil Gibson of University of Oklahoma. Expect to see a hello here from him soon. Then Dr. Gibon will talk with your team, giving you feedback as you plan and carry out your experiments. Don't hesitate to share your first brainstorming ideas and questions. Talking things over with your team members, your teacher, and your scientist mentor at the beginning of a project is especially important. I'll kick off the conversation with an easy (and fun) question: What seeds do you think you will study? All best wishes as you embark on this scientific journey. Can't wait to see where your ideas will take you. Regards, Claire Hemingway |
